Our Area

We have lived in this area now for over 10 years so we know a good bit about some of the best things locally to do, some of the best places to eat and some of the hidden gems. We have shared some of our top tips below!

Getting Here

Remote and secluded but still easy to get to

Our nearest village is the historic weaving village of Crosshill, with the pretty villages of Straiton and Kirkmichael also close by (about 3 miles). We are signposted on google maps for easy directions. We can also be found on what3words using luxury.mandolin.heartache

Using public transport is an option, with the 58 or 358 buses connecting Crosshill to Ayr, and the 361 linking Crosshill to Ayr and Straiton. There is a long walk from the crossroads but this could mean you might be able to leave your car at home.

If you do choose to bring a car, we have EV charging onsite, at a very reasonable fixed price of 25p/kW for charging, please just plug in and we can activate the charger remotely. To encourage active transport we have bike hire on site, both ebikes and mountain bikes from £10/day. We have maps of local walking and cycle routes we have curated.

For guests coming from further afield, we are approx 1 hour from Glasgow, 2hrs from Edinburgh and 1 hour from Cairnryan/Belfast Ferry Terminal. We are a great accommodation choice for those in the area for weddings at stunning nearby venues - Culzean Castle, Trump Turnberry, Blairquhan Castle, Dalduff Farm, Killochan Castle, Brig O'Doon and Cloncaird Castle.

Things To Do

Adventure, Relaxation, Culture and History in One Place

Robert Adam's cliff top masterpiece, Culzean Castle, rises above a world of woods, beaches, secret follies and playparks and is little over 10 miles away. On the theme of History, Ayrshire is home to the birthplace of national poet, Robert Burns, his Cottage and Birthplace Museum in the leafy village of Alloway are well worth a visit (12 miles away). Slightly further afield (23 miles), and with free entry is Dumfries House and Garden, King Charles' Scottish Estate, with walks, cafes, playparks aplenty. The 15th century abbey at Crossraguelonly 6 miles away showcases outstanding remains telling stories of the history of this part of Scotland. Glasgow (just over 1hr away) and Edinburgh (just over 2hrs away) are Scotland's largest cities and are awash with history, culture, galleries and museums for all tastes and interests.

If you're more interested in your outdoor pursuits, we are spoiled where we are at the crossroads between Ayrshire and Dumfries and Galloway. The Gallloway Dark Skies Park stretches to just south of us, Glentrool (18 miles) has a host of stunning walks and cycles, as does Barr (10 miles), Dailly (6 miles) and Straiton (3 miles). For kids, look no further than Heads of Ayr Farm Park for a day out filled with fun, animals, soft play, outdoor play and happy faces. We are not far from many of Ayrshire's finest golf courses; Turnberry, Royal Troon, Dundonald Links and Belleisle are all within an hour's drive.

Food and Drink

From Michelin Listed to Cosy Tearooms

We are spoiled for choice of where to eat and drink near little peru, and here are just a few of our local recommendations. We'll start with The Kirkmichael Arms, established in 1700, a gastro pub and Michelin Listed jewel of a restaurant under one roof, and a ten minute drive from here. One of our other favourites is Souter's Inn, Kirkoswald, less than 20 minutes drive, another historic dining establishment, offering a warm atmosphere and great cuisine. The Greenside in Maybole (15 mins) specialises in tasty authentic wood-fired pizzas and also offers collection as well as a contemporary restaurant.

For breakfasts, lunches or coffee and cakes, we also have a wealth of options. Starting nearby, The Buck Tearoom in Straiton is a cosy tea room offering amazing home baking, teas, coffees and breakfasts/lunches. At 3 miles from little peru it is walkable or easily reached by bike. Kirkmichael Community Shop and Café in the neighbouring pretty village of Kirkmichael offers local produce and friendly service in this excellent community-run hub. Just over 20 minutes drive away is another local favourite, The Coo Shed, an award winning Ayrshire café offering farm-fresh food, milk (their big speciality!) alongside a gift shop and plant nursery.

There are several takeaway food options near little peru as well; The Buck Tearoom and The Greenside (both above) offer collection. In Maybole (approx 15 minutes) is Maybole Chippy (collection or delivery) and Sizzler's Tandoori (collection or delivery) offering further food options.
